It was a busy weekend in Estevan, as the Bruins held their Annual Spring Camp and the Annual Football Fundraiser Dinner took place.
I'll start with the football dinner. It was a fun night as Jason Clermont, Chris Getzlaf and Matt Dominguez were the Guest Speakers of the evening. The voice of the Regina Rams Michael Ball was the MC and provided plenty of humor throughout the evening. I had a chance to speak with Ball a little bit early on the evening and it was kind of nice speaking with Ball since once upon a time Ball was in the same position as me, the voice of the Estevan Bruins and working at CJ1280.
Clermont, Getzlaf and Dominguez were all good speakers and entertained the crowd. Later tonight I'll post the interviews the media with Matt Dominguez and Jason Clermont. Not surprising with 2 current and 1 former receivers, Andy Fantuz was a popular topic.
Clermont's autographed jersey was the hottest item at the live auction as it sold for 4,200 dollars.
At the Bruins spring camp it was highly competitive as 65 players from Saskatchewan, Manitoba and the United States were in town competing for spots with the Bruins. It's going to be a different looking Bruins team next season, and this weekend was the first look at that team.
I'll post an interview I did with former Bruins Head Coach Chad Leslie, where we talked about the players in camp and the future direction of the team.
A fun weekend covering some sports again, unfortunately it's a long time until its the fall again.

It appears Durant's Not Coming Back....No Not that One
Whenever the NFL lockout ends it appears Justin Durant (Darian's brother) won't be a Jacksonville Jaguar anymore.

Spring Camp Preview
The Bruins will hold their Spring Camp this weekend. 1993, 1994 and 1995 year old players will attend the 3 day camp. This weekend's camp will likely be the last event for the Bruins inside of the Civic Auditorium before they move into Spectra Place.
With sessions running Friday, Saturday and Sunday I'll likely stop by the rink to see some possible future Bruin players this weekend.

Stevie Y's Quest for Visors

Wednesday Thoughts
-- I said some news about the Bruins may come up this week. (and no its not the head coach and GM) but it might not surface until next week. I guess there's still a couple of days left in the week.
-- And no, the news wasn't Danyluk's award last night. But still a nice surprise, but really not a surprise if you've ever met Joel.
-- A huge game tonight for Yorkton against La Ronge. While the Terriers are a very good hockey team, I think they would have a real hard time to win 3 straight against La Ronge with 2 of them in La Ronge. Should be another classic in Yorkton tonight.
-- This NHL playoff race is like no other, and as a Flames fan it's killing me. Not looking good for them to sneak in despite their solid run. But I'm looking forward to the fans honoring Jarome Iginla with his 1000th point tonight. Remember when everybody was asking what was wrong with Iggy in November. The last few months Iginla really has taken his game to another level. Also Daymond Langkow's first home game since last March, should be a good one.
-- The Blue Jays are thinking about playing some games in Montreal. Good idea? Maybe, I really thought that everybody outside of Montreal cared more about the Expos instead of Montreal itself. But you would think for a couple games, Montreal can pack the stadium. And plus really Toronto can spare a couple of games, there's only 81 home games a year.

Well Deserved Award for Danyluk
Maybe the easiest award for the SJHL to hand out this season, as Joel Danyluk has been named the 2010-11 Community Player of the year.
Just to give one quick story about Danyluk, when we were in La Ronge in December, during the pre game introductions the Ice Wolve fans gave Danyluk a classy and loud standing ovation. Danyluk was only in La Ronge for like 5 months, but judging from that ovation you would have swore Danyluk played his entire career in La Ronge.
The reason for the ovation was because Danyluk's work with the community. I know he was one of the most popular Bruin players this season, and he was great ambassador for the team. I've talked with Bob Beatty, Karry Biette and Chad Leslie all about Danyluk, and the first thing they will say he's a such a good person with such a great character and a great leader for his team.

Teeing Up the Week
It's kind of a dull time for local sports with the hockey season finished and the spring and summer sports about a month away. Here's a preview of a couple things coming down this week for sports in Estevan.
The Estevan Bruins will hold their spring camp Friday thru Sunday at the Civic Auditorium. Likely the last Bruins event in the old rink as the ice in Spectra Place won't be in place until July. At last check about 40 players will be attending the camp. I know there's a few Manitoba players who won't be attending since this week is Spring Break in Manitoba. But players are coming from all over the place to attend the camp. I'll provide deeper look into the camp later this week.
We could also hear about a couple of announcements about the Bruins club either this week or next. And no, it won't be the announcement of the new Head Coach and GM.
Some football news. The University of Regina Rams will be holding their tryouts this weekend and I know at least one Estevan player, Michael Bittman will be attending the camp. I'll take a further look at the issue later this week.

Quick Credit Union Cup Thoughts
The SJHL finals are underway in La Ronge, and I'm expecting a very exciting rematch between the Ice Wolves and Yorkton Terriers.
Last season both teams surprised their way to the league finals, but this year it's a bit different with both teams finishing tops in their respective divisions.
I honestly think this series will go 7 games. I think in every aspect they're evenly matched and it might come down to La Ronge holding an extra game on home ice.
Yorkton won 3 of the 4 games this season, but I don't take stock in that stat since 3 of the 4 games were played in October.
It should be an entertaining series to watch and to see who will capture the Credit Union Cup this season.
