Bruins Lose to Yorkton 6-1
The CanElson Drilling Estevan Bruins had a solid start in the opening period, but that was overshadowed by a disastrous final 40 minutes as they were defeated by the Yorkton Terriers 6-1.
The Bruins had a strong start to the game lead by the line of Wyatt Garagan, Taylor Reich and Tyler Paslawski. Garagan forced a couple of turnovers but the Bruins were unable to capitalize on their chances.
Estevan would opened the scoring later in the first period when Reich batting a puck out of mid air and past Terriers goalie Connor Barrie to give Estevan a 1-0 lead.
The Bruins were looking okay until David Robertson went off for a penalty and nine seconds later Tanner Froese was called for a high sticking penalty which gave Yorkton an extended 5 on 3 power play. Jeremy Johnson took advantage and scored for Yorkton to tie the game up at 1-1 after one period.
In the second period, Yorkton grabbed the momentum and never looked back. Derek Falloon, Chase Norrish, and Patrick Martens each scored their first goals to gain the lead for Yorkton as they lead 4-1. Martens goal came with 47 seconds left in the game and it seemed like it was the backbreaker for the Bruins.
In the third period Zak Majkowski and Tyler Giebel put the game away with a pair of goals as they went to post their 5th win of the season. The power plays were a big factor in the story as Yorkton went for 3 for 8 while Estevan was 0 for 3. Curtis Martinu made 29 saves for the Bruins in the loss.
After the game Bruins Head Coach Keith Cassidy wasn't happy with his team's effort. "We just didn't play well, we didn't show up. Yeah we had a good start and we were doing what we wanted to do but obviously our minds weren't there for the entire. Honestly I'm questioning our collective hockey IQ because I saw stupid play, after stupid play and we're going to address that."
Another thing that Cassidy pointed out was the team taking off shifts at times in the game. He said that on any given night any team in this league can beat any other team and if you don't give a 100% effort than you'll be on the short end of the stick.
Cassidy added the loss was very frustrating considering it seemed like the Bruins were ready to turn the corner after Saturday's win against Weyburn. Things don't get any easier for the Bruins this weekend as they kick off a northern road trip in Humboldt on Friday followed by a matchup with the undefeated Flin Flon Bombers on Saturday.
The Bruins were without Calder Neufeld who suffered a sprained ankle and could be out of the lineup for a couple of weeks.
