The first SJHL Identification Camp for Canada West's team at the World Junior A Challenge came to an end yesterday at the Elgar Petersen Arena in Humboldt.
40 of the league's best 1993, 1994 and 1995 players were in Humboldt for the two day that players into a pair of squads and compete in a pair of scrimmages. Representing the CanElson Drilling Estevan Bruins were Tyler Kauk, Austin Yano, Hudson Morrison and Tyler Pelletier. Bruins Head Coach Keith Cassidy was also on hand at the camp to help coach the one of the teams at the camp.
SJHL President Bill Chow was happy with how the camp unfolded. "It's been very interesting and very competitive. I think from talking to the different scouts NCAA, WHL or NHL scouts they're more than happy with the concept that we've come up with."
The ID camp was introduced after the announcement of the cancellation of the Showcase featuring all 12 teams playing a pair of games in an SJHL arena. Chow says we may see the ID camp stick around. " At the end of the day it's not up to me totally. We'll sit and talk about it but I think its conceivable that we probably stick with something very similar and possibly expand it."
Team Canada West will be coached by Humboldt's Dean Brockman who served as an assistant last year. The World Junior A Challenge will take place in Nova Scotia this year. In the past there have been over 150 players taken part in the tournament who has moved on to the NHL including Kyle Turris and this year's Number one pick Nail Yakupov.
