A New Rival For Estevan High School Football

Estevan and Weyburn have been natural rival in sports..Hockey, Baseball, Basketball among others. And next season you can add high school football to that list. Weyburn will be joining the Moose Jaw High School Football League, I talked to the ECS Elecs Head Coach Marco Ricci about what this move could mean for the ECS Elecs.

Kicking Off the Week

-- A quiet weekend for the Bruins with just the 8-1 win over Kindersley on Friday night at Spectra Place. The Bruins will be scoreboard watching this week as the two teams who they're battling for playoff positioning will hit the road. Yorkton is in Nipawin tomorrow and then they head to Flin Flon on Wednesday. While Melville is in Battleford and Kindersley this week. The Bruins and Terriers will be even in terms of games played after their road trip while the Mils will still have games in hand.

-- The Bruins will close off their six game homestand this weekend with the Nipawin Hawks on Friday and Sunday against Battleford. I'm expecting Friday's game to be a very rough one after the previous three meetings this season with the Hawks and Bruins, I know the Bruins aren't too happy with their last matchup in Nipawin that went in favor to Nipawin.

-- The next three home games Jan.27 vs Nipawin Jan. 29 Battlefords Feb.8 Yorkton won't be broadcasted on CJ1280 and discoverestevan.com. but the final three home games and all of the playoff home games will be broadcasted on the radio and internet.

-- No weekly winners this week with just the one game, I'll just factor in the Kindersley game with the two games this weekend.

-- The Bruins are unveiling their new mascot next month, the naming contest for the mascot will be closing on Wednesday, so stop by the Bruins office and drop off your entry.

-- Football fans were treated to a pair of great Conference Championship games in the NFL, and I'm a die hard 49ers fan so obviously I'm hurting today BIG TIME. But hats off to the Giants and Patriots for surviving this far in the season and will compete in the Super Bowl in two weeks from Indy.

-- Not sure who's the biggest goat Kyle Williams or Billy Cundiff.

-- I think the 49ers will be back in the NFC Championship sooner than later, I think Jim Harbaugh has something special going on in San Fran, kind of like the other coach from Stanford the 49ers hired in the legendary Bill Walsh.

-- As of right now I'm picking the Giants in the Super Bowl, they just seem like a team of destiny right now.

-- Estevan and Weyburn will be rivals next season in High School Football as Weyburn will be joining the Moose Jaw High School Football league. I talked to Elecs Head Coach Marco Ricci and I'll have the interview up later this afternoon.

-- Estevan's Brent Gedak is off to the Provincial Tankard after winning the A Final in the Southern Curling Playdowns in Swift Current this weekend.

-- Less than a month now til spring training camp opens up in baseball. I know the Blue Jays said they're probably done making moves, but I just got the feeling they have one more trade up their sleeve.

Bruins Crush Klippers 8-1

The CanElson Drilling Estevan Bruins made a statement that they don’t plan on fading down the stretch drive as they picked up a big 8-1 win over the Kindersley Klippers. 

The Bruins exploded in the first period as they scored six times to open up the game. Derek Whitehill opened up the scoring at 2:43 mark to give the Bruins the early lead. Tanner Froese would add to the Bruins lead shortly afterwards to extend the lead to 2-0. 

Matt Brykaliuk would score the Bruins first powerplay goal to give the Bruins a 3-0 advantage. Shortly after that Calder Neufeld scored from a nice pass to make it 4-0. A couple of minutes later Denin Boesch found Matthew Dochylo along in front and Dochylo scored to make it 5-0. The Bruins would conclude the period with a point shot from Connor Milligan giving the Bruins the lead 6-0 after 1. 

In the second period, the Bruins went right back to work as Froese took advantage and buried a shot top shelf and picked up his second goal of the game. With the Bruins leading 7-0, the Klippers would score their only goal of the evening when Trent Hermary batted in a loose rebound. With just under 2 minutes left in the period, Tyler Paslawski scored on a loose rebound and the Bruins lead 8-1 after two periods. There was no scoring in the third as the final was 8-1. 

The Bruins penalty kill was very busy as they killed 10 out of 11 penalties, and Tyler Ross had a solid night with 35 saves.

Bruins Host Klippers Tonight

The Estevan Bruins are hoping a five day break will do them good as they look for the third straight win tonight as they host the Kindersley Klippers. A game you can catch on CJ1280 and discoverestevan.com beginning at 7:20 with the pregame show.

The Bruins head into tonight's game with momentum after back to back wins against the Flin Flon Bombers on the weekend. The club is hoping the loss to the La Ronge Ice Wolves the night before their back to back wins over the Bombers can serve as the turning point for the team heading down the stretch. Bruins defenceman Dominic Perrault believes the team took last Friday's loss to heart and turned it into a postive with their wins over the Bombers.

Perrault was a big playoff hero for the Bruins last season and he's looking to step once again this season for the Bruins especially since he's the only 20 year old defenceman on the Bruins blue line. He felt that he got off to a strong start with his game against Flin Flon on Sunday, "I'm not normally an offensive guy, I decided tried to do something new on Sunday and it worked out as I had a couple of chances, and I laid out the body and that's something I have to do every night that's my game."

The Bruins should be welcoming a new body on the blue line tonight as Zach MacLellan is expected to make his debut for the Bruins tonight after being acquired from the Battlefords Northstars last week. MacLellan initially went home to BC after learning he was traded to Melfort but once the North Stars recaquired him and later trade him to Estevan he had a change of heart and decided to report to the Bruins lineup this week. Perrault believes he will add a lot to the Bruins "He definitely shows a big presence along the blue line, he plays a very physical game and hopefully he can come in and help our blue line.

The Bruins and Klippers will be meeting each other four times down the stretch, the Bruins have gone 1-0-0-1 against the Klippers this season but in their last game at the end of November former Bruins goalie Brandon Stone helped lead the Klippers to a 3-2 shootout win. Perrault believes they have to treat tonight's game like any other game, he notes that this season their worse games have come against teams who are below them in the standings because they take them too lightly, he believes that won't be the case tonight.

After tonight's game, the Bruins will be off for the next seven days as they return to action next Friday when they host the Nipawin Hawks at Spectra Place.

Bruin Weekly Winners

This past week the Estevan Bruins went 2-1 as they opened up the weekend with a 6-4 loss to the La Ronge Ice Wolves. The Bruins would rebound on Saturday and Sunday as they picked up a pair of wins over the Flin Flon Bombers 4-2 on Saturday and 2-0 on Sunday.

Josh Jelinski

Jelinski along with his line mates Tyler Paslawski and Matthew Dochylo had another big weekend for the Bruins. Jelinski lead the way with 3 goals and 2 assists including a pair of goals in the Bruins win over the Bombers on Sunday. The line has been taking care of business at both ends of the ice as they have been very dominant inside of the offensive zone especially in front of the net and along the boards.

Defenceman of the Week

Dominic Perrault

Perrault was out of the lineup on Saturday but he came back into the lineup with a vengeance on Sunday in the Bruins win over Flin Flon. Perrault was a physical force all night long as he took advantage of his size and strength. Along with his physical play, Perrault displayed his offensive talents as he made several offensive rushes into the Bombers. Perrault was a key offensive stand out for the Bruins last season in their win in the Survivor Series especially in the pivotal Game 5, and if the Bruins are to make a postseason run, they will need that kind of effort from Perrault.

Rookie of the Week

Tyler Ross

The weekend had a shaky start for Ross as he was in net for the Bruins in their 6-4 loss to the La Ronge Ice Wolves. But by the end of the weekend, the Michigan native settled down and picked up a pair of wins including the first shutout of the season for the Bruins on Sunday in their 3-0 win over Flin Flon. After not playing a lot of hockey before arriving to Estevan, Ross has been busy over the past couple of weeks filling in for Steven Glass who has been sidelined with an injury. With the Bruins only having one game on Friday at home, Ross may get his fourth straight in net.

Unsung Hero

Matt Brykaliuk


Brykaliuk scored a pair of goals on the weekend and continues to display more confidence inside of the offensive zone. Both goals Brykaliuk had some extra time to shoot and instead of shooting instantly, he waited a second longer and buried it top shelf. Brykaliuk also saw some time on the blue line in Sunday's win with the Bruins down to 3 regular defencemen with injuries and penalty troubles. Brykaliuk skated on a line with Derek Whitehill and Taylor Reich last weekend and he could become more of an offensive threat for the Bruins down the stretch.

Western Canadian Championships Q&A with Bill Chow

After months of speculation it's now official the ANAVET Cup will be no more after this season and will be replaced with the new Western Canadian Championships with the BCHL, AJHL, SJHL and MJHL and a host city. I spoke to SJHL President Bill Chow about the new championship.

Ross Named Goalie of the Week

It was a very big weekend for Bruins goalie Tyler Ross, on Saturday Ross picked up his first victory in the Bruins 4-2 win over Flin Flon.

Ross would follow up Saturday's win with a shutout (3-0) win on Sunday against Flin Flon and today he was named the Goalie of the Week in the SJHL.

Ross has been with the Bruins for about two weeks after spending the early part of the season in Michigan.

Ross played in all three games this weekend and could draw back in the lineup as the Bruins host Kindersley Friday night. Steven Glass was out of the lineup with a knee injury and could be back for Friday's game.

Bruins Blank Bombers 3-0

The Estevan Bruins picked up their second straight win as they blanked the Flin Flon Bombers 3-0. With the win, the Bruins move back into a tie of second place in the Sherwood Conference with the Yorkton Terriers and improve their record to .500 (23-23-0-1) 

Early in the first period the Bombers Landon Hiebert landed awkwardly in the boards and need to be carried out on a stretcher which lead to a lengthy delay in the game. 

The Bruins opened the scoring at the 8:20 mark of the first period when Josh Jelinski scored his 9^th goal of the season as the Bruins lead 1-0 after 20 minutes.  Late in the first period Eric Baldwin went down with a lower body injury and didn’t return. 

In the second it was Jelinski once again as he made a move past the Bombers defenceman at centre ice that allowed a 3 on 1 rush for the Bruins. Jelinski elected to keep the puck on the rush and he buried it top shelf to give him a pair on the night and the Bruins a 2-0 lead after two periods. 

The Bruins buckled down defensively in the third period as Tyler Ross made 20 saves in the period and 32 on the evening  to pick up the first shutout for the Bruins this season. Michael Hengen added an empty for the Bruins to make the final of 3-0. The Bruins penalty kill was busy in the third as the Bruins killed off four Bomber power plays. The Bruins did lose Tyler Paslawski late in the third period as he took a puck on the outside of the hand.

The Bruins have a little break in their schedule as they play Kindersley on Friday at Spectra Place, in their only game of the week. I talked to Head Coach Keith Cassidy in the postgame show, and spoke to Jelinski after the game.

Bruins Beat Bombers 4-2

The Estevan Bruins snapped their four game losing streak as they defeated the Flin Flon Bombers 4-2 at Spectra Place.

The Bruins opened the scoring in the first period as Tanner Froese scored his 10^th goal of the season off a quick faceoff win from Ben Johnstone. The Bombers would tie it up when Jesse Myseriok replied for the Bombers, but on the very next shift Josh Jelinski scored his 8^th goal of the season as the Bruins headed into the locker room after 20 minutes.

Flin Flon would score the only goal in the second period as Landon Hiebert snuck behind the Bruins defence and scored for the Bombers to tie the game at 2-2.

In the third period the Bruins power play stepped up again as Matt Brykaliuk took a nice a pass from Calder Neufeld and buried a shot top shelf to give the Bruins the lead. Cole Olson added an empty netter to make the final 4-2.

Tyler Ross picked up his first win as a Bruin as he made 33 saves.

Lanny Visits Estevan..Bruins Lose to Ice Wolves

Fans young and old in Estevan were very excited yesterday for the appearance of Lanny McDonald and they weren't disappointed as the man with the famous mustache

McDonald started his day by visiting the Spruce Ridge School speaking to kids from Grade 3-8, McDonald explained the benefit of playing sports to kids and being a good role model. After his speech, McDonald answered questions from the kids and signed some autographs.

Last night McDonald visited Spectra Place for the first time and he was blown away by the rink and especially the Bruins dressing room. He gave the Bruins a motivational speech and McDonald says that the message he was trying to give was that there's nothing bigger than the team and that there is no stronger bond than the one that's shared with a junior hockey team.

McDonald signed autographs for fans before the game, during the intermissions and after the game. During the first intermission the Bruins auctioned a pair of autographed Lanny McDonald jerseys that raise 5,000 dollars for the Bruins scholarship fund. In the second intermission McDonald took part in the shoot to win contest.

After the game, McDonald spoke at a reception at the Days Inn Plaza and answered questions from the audience.

Earlier in the afternoon McDonald spoke to the media.

The game itself didn't turn out the way the Bruins didn't want to as they were defeated by the La Ronge Ice Wolves 6-4. The Bruins opened the scoring an had a 3-2 lead before the Ice Wolves scored three unanswered goals to give them a 5-3 lead, Cole Olson scored with 3:35 left to cut the lead to 5-4 but the Ice Wolves scored on the next shift to give them the win.

Matthew Dochylo scored a pair and Matt Brykaliuk also scored for the Bruins.
