Game 3 Tonight

After a wild Game 2 ending on Saturday, the Bruins will battle the Melville Millionaires in Game 3 the best of 5 Survivor Series tonight.

The Bruins were in the lead with 90 seconds left, but Melville was able to score twice in the last 90 seconds to get the win and even up the series.

At the end of the game, both teams were pushing and shoving which will make for a highly physical and intense Game 3 tonight.

I won't be broadcasting tonight's Game 3 on the radio due to Don Cherry's Coast to Coast hitting our airwaves. I will be doing the game for the live internet feed, and will be broadcasting Game 4 tomorrow in Melville.

This could be a busy week for yours truly, I might end up doing a hockey game every night this week.

Bruins vs Mils Game 2 Preview

Hopefully the Estevan Bruins winning streak isn't like my roll up the rim streak, that ended after 3 wins today.

The Bruins are coming off a dramatic overtime 5-4 win against the Mils in Game 1. The line of Mark Cross-Josh Jelinski- Troy Hunter delivered as advertised last night. They established a physical game and provided the energy and scoring the Bruins needed. With last change tonight, I'm sure Jaime Fiesel will be using it to his advantage against these 3.

I thought the Bruins top D pairing last night was Dominic Perrault and Matt Szpak. Both were solid defensively and didn't cough up the puck much, and they'll be expected to do the same again. Ty Ariss looked pretty good for his first game back, but Chad Leslie thinks Ariss can get even better as the playoffs move on.

I really thought it would be a no brainer Alex Sirard would start tonight, but I checked on Craig Stein's blog and Fiesel said he wasn't sure who would be starting in net. Rakochy may be the better goalie, and he's the future of the Mils goaltenders, but I think after last night, Melville will go back to Sirard, but it's all up to Jaime Fiesel.

We'll have Game 2 on CJ1280 and Discoverestevan.com beginning at 7:15.

Dave "The Hammer" Schultz will be the 2nd intermission guest.

Bruins Win Game 1 In OT

The Estevan Bruins showed off it's dramatic flare in a 5-4 overtime win over the Melville Millionaires.

The first period it was all Bruins as Mark Cross scored a hat trick and Ben Findlay added a powerplay marker to help the Bruins lead 4-1 after 1.

To Melville's credit they battled back. After pulling Zach Rakochy and putting in Alex Sirard, the Mils tied the game and sent it to overtime.

Josh Jelinski made it a short overtime with his game winner 46 seconds in.

Moments after the win I caught up with the overtime hero Josh Jelinski.

The line of Mark Cross Troy Hunter and Josh Jelinski was the difference for the Bruins. Cross Jelinski and Hunter are a rough line that will cause problems for other teams. With last line change tomorrow, it will be interesting to see who Melville matches that line with.

A couple of other Bruins who I thought were solid were Ben Findlay, Dominic Perrault and Matt Szpak.

Melville played a great road game and deserves credit for their comeback. The goalie switch was a stroke of genius by Jaime Fiesel and I think there's little doubt Sirard starts in Game 2.

How can Game 2 top Game 1? Not sure if it will, but tune into find out. 7:15 on CJ1280 and discoverestevan.com

My 2 Cents On How the Bruins Can Win

Up Front:
With 9 20 year old players, the time is now for this team to win a championship. The Bruins will try and become the 2nd straight Survivor Series team to win the SJHL title. The Bruins line of Mark Cross-Troy Hunter-Josh Jelinski should be a bruising line that will try and wear Melville down.

The Bruins are a 4 line team and will use all 12 forwards as much as they can. The 2 best forwards over the last week have been Ryan Ostertag and Chris Daniels. Every championship team needs an unsung hero, and if one these players continue their current pace, the Bruins should be able to go on a run.

Backend:

Injuries have been the story for the Bruins blueline. Joel Kot missed all of January with an injury. His first game back Ty Ariss got hurt, and then 2 games later Lucas Stubel got hurt. But since Ariss and Stubel's injuries, Matt Szpak and Eric Baldwin have stepped up to become solid regulars in the Bruins lineup. Ariss should be back in the lineup for the Bruins, while Stubel is likely out for the Series.Kot has been showing signs of breaking out offensively over the last couple of weeks, and the playoffs are the perfect stage for that too happen.

In net, the Bruins will turn to Joel Danyluk. Danyluk hasn't had the greatest regular season but after last year's playoffs everyone knows what Danyluk is capable of. It's been hard for Danyluk to get into a really rhythm as he shared the goaltending duties with Shea Cooper, but Danyluk will have every chance to carry the Bruins to the next round. And you know with another shot at Yorkton on the line, Danyluk will do everything in his power to get the Bruins to Yorkton for next Friday.

My 2 Cents on why Melville Can Win

Up Front:

With the trades of Brayden Metz and Cody Hanson, Mils Head Coach Jaime Fiesel sent the message the team was eyeing up the future. There's plenty of quality forwards for the Mils including Roger Tagoona, Michael Desjarlais, Mark Owen, and Lucas Froese to name a few. For the Mils to beat the Bruins, they will need all of their lines to score. With a young team it has to be scoring by committee.

Back end:

The Mils will have to lean on Craig Karius and Tyson Newell. The Bruins are going to try and establish the physical tempo and the Mils blueline will have to match it and exceed it. In net, Zach Rakochy will get the nod. Rakochy stats are very similar to Danyluk's from the regular season, but when it comes to playoff experience it's not even close. Rakochy is making his first playoff start tonight. If the Mils are going to beat the Bruins, Rakochy has to be better than Danyluk.

Final Thought

I'm not going to make a prediction because of conflict of interest, but I think everybody agrees the Bruins are the favorite. The Bruins will try and be physical and will count on getting scoring from all the lines. For the Mils, they have to win one game in Estevan, and with a young team the Mils best shot might be tonight in Game 1.

SJHL Break

The SJHL regular season is over and the Survivor Series will start on Friday. The Bruins ended the season with a 6-5 shootout win over Melville.

The game was a little bit sloppy and at time lacked flow. The Bruins escaped with no injuries in the meaningless game. Troy Hunter and Ryan Andersen were scratches and will be back in the lineup. The Bruins are hopeful to get Ty Ariss back in the lineup for Game 1 on Friday. Lucas Stubel status in the Survivor Series is questionable.

Tonight I'm hitting the road and covering Senior Hockey in Redvers. Bienfait Coalers and Redvers Rockets in Big 6 Semi-Final hockey action on CJ1280 @ 8:00.

Bruins and Mils Notes

The Bruins close off the regular season tonight in a Survivor Series Preview against the Melville Millionaires.

For tonight, the Bruins will just want to establish a presence for the Survivor Series and make sure Melville isn't heading to the playoffs with some extra momentum. The Bruins are also hoping to avoid injury trouble on the blue line, as they're already missing Lucas Stubel and Ty Ariss.

One question that likely won't get answered tonight is goaltending. We probably won't find out the starting goalie for the Survivor Series until Friday night. It will be interesting to see who's in net tonight.

Bruins are 5-1 this season against the Mils.

Bruins End Hounds Season

The weather outside felt like minus 30, but the game felt like it was the beginning of September.

The Bruins Picked Up a 5-3 win over Notre Dame this afternoon. A meaningless game in the standings. The Bruins line of Mark Cross Troy Hunter and Josh Jelinski all scored. Hunter made a perfect setup to Joel Kot on the powerplay and Chris Daniels scored.

The Bruins will meet the Melville Millionaires tomorrow in a Survivor Series Preview. Game 1 is Friday in Estevan.

Bruins Banquet Wrap

It was a blast MCing the Bruins Awards Banquet on Saturday, and everyone I talked to had a good time. Dave "The Hammer" Schultz was a great speaker as was Mike McCullough.

The game that was cancelled tonight with the Bruins and Hounds, will be made up Monday at 2:00.

What better way to spend Family Day, than to watch some SJHL hockey.

Locker Talk Preview

Tonight on Locker Talk it's a one on one interview with the Bruins Captain, Troy Hunter. Coming off the Bruins overtime loss against Yorkton, we talked about the Bruins approach to the final 2 games of the regular season, and playoffs.

We talk about Hunter's RBC Cup experience last season, the move to Estevan and the future of the Bruins team.

Bruins vs Hounds PPD

The Estevan Bruins were suppose to play the Notre Dame Hounds tonight, but the game has been canceled due to poor road conditions.

No make up date has been announced, but I'm guessing it will be Monday Night.

If that's the case, the Bruins will know if they have a shot at third with Weyburn playing out the remainder of their season on Friday and Sunday.

Bruins vs Terriers with Smitty...

It's a huge game at the Civic Auditorium between the Estevan Bruins and Yorkton Terriers. The Bruins win and they get third. If Yorkton gets a point they clinch first spot in the Conference.

To preview tonight's game I had a chat with forward Dylan Smith.

Ty Ariss, and Lucas Stubel are still out of the lineup with injuries. Matt Dochylo was a scratch on Saturday. I think he's too good of a player to be sitting 2 nights in a row, but after Saturday's game who do you take out?

Hopefully tonight's game is just as good as last months shootout win for the Bruins over the Terriers. I thought that game was one of the best ones this year.

And here's a clip of Lucas Stubel doing color for me in Saturday's win and calling his own shot.

Should be a great game at the Civic tonight.

Bruins Rebound in Weyburn

I was planning on posting before the Bruins-Red Wings game, but the internet connection was faulty in Weyburn.

The Bruins backs were against the wall heading into tonight's game with Weyburn. A loss would've likely sent the Bruins to the survivor series, but the Bruins picked up a huge 5-2 win over the Red Wings.

The Bruins were lead by Shea Cooper who stepped up with a HUGE game. In the first period, the Bruins started shaky but Cooper was up to the task as he made 10 saves. I counted at least 3 of those being highlight reel saves.

In the 2nd the Bruins took control with a pair of goals. Cole Olsen and Calder Neufeld got the Bruins on the scoreboard. Weyburn would tie it up, but before the end of the period, Joel Kot's shot deflected off a Red Wing stick and it went in the net, and the Bruins gained the lead. With a 3-2 lead in the third, the Bruins got a powerplay goal from Olsen. Mark Cross would add an empty net goal to give the Bruins a 5-2 win.

There were a lot of Bruin players who were strong tonight. Brett Rock, Tyler Spencer, Cole Olsen were a couple of standouts.

Shea Cooper was unbelievable. The Red Wings could've gotten an early lead, but Cooper played a strong game. There was no doubt Cooper was the best player on the ice for the Bruins.

While Cooper played strong, I expect Joel Danyluk to get the start on Tuesday against Yorkton.

But with the Bruins win, they control their own destiny. If they win their remaining 3 games, the Bruins will take 3rd place in the Sherwood Conference.

It should be a fun final week for the Bruins

Bruins Magic Number is 1

Bruins/SJHL

After a long weekend, it's quickly back to work for yours truly. The Bruins head to Wilcox to face the Notre Dame Hounds tonight.

With a single point, the Bruins clinch a spot in the post season. Where they start in the postseason remains to be seen. The Bruins are 1 point ahead of the Red Wings for third with a weekend showdown that will go a long way to figuring out who will avoid the survivor series. The Bruins look to continue it's recent strong play on the road as they've won 3 out of their last 4 away from the Civic Auditorium. After tonight, the Bruins are only on the road for one more game in the reg. season Saturday in Weyburn.

You can catch the game on CJ1280 and discoverestevan.com at 7:50

Quick Super Bowl Thoughts

There's christmas, there's birthdays and then there's the Super Bowl.

No matter which team are playing in this game, I'm always watching. I think today's game will be a defensive battle.

The key for the Steelers is to establish the running game. If Rashard Mendenhall can run over 100 yards, then Big Ben will have more success with the pass and the Steelers d will have more rest.

For the Packers, Aaron Rodgers needs to play the best game he ever played. He needs to take total control, like he did against Atlanta. I just think thats too tough against the Steelers.

My Pick is Steelers to win 21-17 and Mendenhall wins the MVP. Happy Super Bowl everybody.

Missing the Bruins/UFC 126 Picks

For the first time in 3 months, I'll be missing a Bruins game as they host Notre Dame tonight. Last time I missed a Bruins game was Nov.2 against Notre Dame, and a lot has happened since that matchup.

A win for the Bruins and their magic number for clinching a playoff spot is down to 1. Which is a small achievement for a team that has bigger aspirations.

I'm expecting a strong game from the Bruins in the first home game after a successful road trip. It will be interesting to see the D pairings with the injuries to Ty Ariss and Lucas Stubel. Ariss could be back before the end of the regular season, while Stubel is hopeful to be back in time for the beginning of the playoffs.

Next game that I'm calling is Tuesday night in Wilcox.

---

UFC 126 picks

Silva vs Belfort
Pick: Silva

Bader vs Jones
Pick:Bader

Franklin vs Griffin
Pick: Franklin

Antonio Banuelos vs. Miguel Torres
Pick: Torres

Jake Ellenberger vs. Carlos Eduardo Rocha
Pick: Rocha

The biggest reason I want Silva to win is because I like a million others, want to see Silva vs GSP down the road.

My pick for match of the night is Bader and Jones. And there's just something about Bader that makes me think upset.

This should be a good card tonight!

Going Home

The Bruins will try and complete a 3 game sweep through the Bauer Conference as they square off with the Humboldt Broncos tonight at 7:30. (7:20 on CJ1280 and discoverestevan.com). If the Bruins would win, this would be the first 3 game sweep on a road trip for this team in a long time.

For me I also look forward to the trip back to Humboldt. Humboldt is where I grew up and spent the first 20 years of my life. I look back at my childhood with nothing but good times and great memories. It was the birthplace of my nickname Beener..heck no one in Humboldt calls me Blaine, not even my parents. The majority of my friends were made in Humboldt, (or thru my friends from Humboldt.)

With that being said, I'm enjoying my time with the Bruins. People from Humboldt still ask me "Man you're still a Broncos fan aren't you?" And I always say sorry, but I'm behind the Bruins. I always wish the Broncos the best of luck, but whenever they face Estevan, I'm cheering for the Bruins.

With a win the Bruins would move 5 points back of Kindersley and sets up an interesting race down the stretch. After tonight the Bruins have a pair of home and home sets. Saturday and Tuesday against Notre Dame. Next Friday and Saturday against Weyburn.

Locker Talk Preview

This week on Locker Talk.

Brandon Flegel from CJ1280 stops as we talked about the ending to the Bruins-Kindersley game from last Saturday. Someone the discussion got shifted to 1980's Nintendo games.

Recap the provincial curling action, and I manage to get some Joe Theismann beaking in there. (Like that's hard)

Locker Talk can be seen in Estevan on Access 7 at 6:30 on Thursdays and once again at 12:00 on Saturdays.

Bruins On A Roll: Win Over Melfort

It was a thriller in Melfort, as the Bruins came from behind to beat the Mustangs 3-2 in a shootout, and now move into sole possession of third place.

The Mustangs were leading 2-1 halfway through the third until Dylan Smith scored his 21st of the season to tie the game, and eventually sending the game into overtime. Overtime settled nothing, and the Bruins would send Justin Waskewitch, Dylan Smith and Jonathan Ceci to shoot, in the shootout. And all three players would score to get the win for the Bruins.

It was a great game to watch with excellent play by both teams, and overall one of the best games I've seen this season.

Once again it was a strong team effort for Estevan, and the Bruins are playing their best hockey since October. The reason, is their depth. The Bruins are getting solid play from a lot of players, and every night a new player steps up to have a big game. Tonight I thought Dylan Smith was the best Bruin. Smith is regaining his scoring touch, and that's nothing but good news for the Bruins. The Bruins have a lot of weapons that are starting to end their slumps at the right time.

With the win, the Bruins are 2 points ahead of Weyburn with a game in hand, but they're now 7 points back of Kindersley with 2 games in hand. The way the Bruins have been playing over the last couple of weeks, I don't think 2nd place is out of the reach for the Bruins.

One Team Left on the Bruins List: Bruins-Mft Preview

After a good start to the 3 day road trip last night in Nipawin, the Bruins will face a tough test in the Melfort Mustangs. The Bruins are 0-3 against the Mustangs this year. Melfort is the only team in the SJHL who the Bruins have yet to beat.

Melfort is one of the best teams in the SJHL, especially with the acquisitions of Brayden Metz and Cody Hanson. They might have the best player in the SJHL in Charles Corsi, and they're clearly one of the top teams in the SJHL heading into the final weeks of the season.

The Bruins can move into sole possession of third place with a win tonight in Melfort. The Bruins need to play the same type of game tonight as they did against the Hawks, a full team effort with every single player making a contribution.

Probably the same lineup tonight, except I THINK(notice the emphasis on think) Ty Ariss will be out of the lineup after suffering an upper body injury last night. The good news is Dylan Smith should be back in the lineup after feeling ill last night in Nipawin.

Joel Danyluk will probably get the start in net. Danyluk's play has picked up over the last couple weeks, even in the losses against Kindersley and La Ronge, I thought he was deserving of a win. Danyluk is starting to peak at the right time with the playoffs coming up in 3 weeks time.

Catch the game on CJ1280 and Discoverestevan.com at 7:20...2nd intermission Guest will be Liam Brennan, the former Bruin who won the SJHL championship in La Ronge last year and is now playing in Augustana College in Alberta.

Bruins Team Effort Prevails

It was a real team effort for the Estevan Bruins tonight in their 7-2 win over the Nipawin Hawks.

Tonight's game was the first one for the "Bird Cage" in Nipawin, since a chemical spill last week forced the cancellation of 2 Hawks home games. In order for the rink to be playable, all of the doors at the rink were opened through out the day. As a result the temperature was around Minus 34 inside of the "Bird Cage".

But the Bruins pulled together tonight, after a scoreless first period where the Bruins only registered 2 shots. The Bruins would respond with 6 goals from different scorers. Troy Hunter would be the 7th different goal scorer in the third period as the Bruins won 7-2.

Every single Bruins player had a strong game,(heck Joel Danyluk who was the backup goalie tonight, deserves credit for braving the cold and sitting on the bench all night). But I thought Josh Jelinski and Jonathan Ceci were the 2 stand outs.

Jelinski continues to be the hardest working Bruin player night in and night out. He was once again solid at both ends of the ice. Jelinski was playing on a line with Mark Cross and Ryan Andersen tonight, and the native of Riderville Saskatchewan (Avonlea) really thrived playing the extra minutes.

Jonathan Ceci was Mr. December in the SJHL, and I thought he was the best player for the Bruins in January. And he started February in style with a goal and 2 assists in his homecoming game in Nipawin. The former Hawk has been a spark in the Bruins lineup,he's picked up 15 points in 9 games since being traded to Estevan.Ceci has been a classic playmaker,as he has made the players around him better since January 10.

It was a good night for the Bruins with the win and losses by Weyburn and Kindersley. It should be a good game for the Bruins tomorrow night in Melfort.

Tuesday's Thoughts

Bruins/SJHL

The Bruins kick off an important road trip in Nipawin tonight. The Bruins trail the Weyburn Red Wings by 2 points in the race foe third spot in the Sherwood Conference with 2 games in hand. With the Bruins playing against Nipawin, Melfort and Humboldt over the next 3 days I believe at least 2 wins are very much possible. Weyburn only has 1 game in the next 3 days, tonight against Notre Dame. I think if there's any time for the Bruins to pass Weyburn, it's this week.

NHL

Even if the All-Star game was a glorified shinny game. I still give the All-Star weekend a big thumbs up, mostly for the fantasy draft. I think All-Star games are a thing of the past. But I give credit for the NHL for trying with a good idea. Major League Baseball's idea of giving home field advantage of the World Series to the winning league is really stupid, and don't get me started on the Pro Bowl.

NFL

My Superbowl thoughts will come later this week. As of right now I'm leaning towards the Steelers, but I can also see Aaron Rodgers becoming the 21st Century Version of Steve Young.

And on a side note, doesn't everybody else in the world wish that the Monday after Super Bowl would become a stat holiday? Especially with a UFC card the night before the Super Bowl. I took the Monday off work, but I have the feeling I'm not the only one.
