Bruins Pull Out 6-5 Win Over Melfort

It wasn't pretty but the CanElson Drilling Estevan Bruins beat the Melfort Mustangs 6-5.

It was a back and forth game all night as the Bruins didn't gain posession of the lead until the 7:47 mark of the third period when Matt Brykaliuk scored to put the Bruins ahead for good.

Melfort started off the scoring at the 33 second mark when Curtis Fontaine scored to give the Mustangs the early advantage. Calder Neufeld tied the game back up at 1-1 after taking a pass from Ben Johnstone and getting his league leading 19th goal of the season.

Anthony Pickering would sneak one past Brandon Stone before the end of the first to make it 2-1 after 20 minutes.

In the second Melfort would extend the lead to 3-1 with Pearce Gourley scoring, but the Bruins would tie it up with a pair, starting shorthanded as Cole Olson held on a pass long enough to feed a perfect pass to Taylor Reich who scored, and then 1:01 a point shot from Dominic Perrault hit the back of the net, it was credited as a Dylan Smith tip as the Bruins tied the game at 3-3.

Melfort would open the scoring in the third when Brennan Tash scored short handed to give the Mustangs the lead. But at the 7:00 mark, Smith would add his second of the game and then 47 seconds Brykaliuk scored. Smith would score his 16th of the season in the empty net to complete the hat trick as the Bruins took a 6-4 lead. Carter Berg scored with 35 seconds for Melfort to cut the lead to 6-5 but the Bruins would hang on.

After the game I caught up with Taylor Reich.

I'll have more thoughts about tonight's game and tomorrow, but after a 15 hour work day, I need some sleep big time.

You can tune into Saturday night's Bruins game in Melville on CJ1280 and DiscoverEstevan.Com beginning with the pregame show at 7:20.
