Bruins Start off 2012 With 3-2 Win Over Weyburn

2012 got off to a good start for the CanElson Drilling Estevan Bruins as they hung on for a 3-2 win over the Weyburn Red Wings at Spectra Place today.

The Bruins got off to a quick start as Dylan Smith created a turnover behind the Red Wings net and found Cole Olson in front and Olson scored his 11th of the season to give the Bruins the lead 23 seconds in to the first.

Weyburn tied the game a few minutes later when Keegan Bruce scored. The Bruins would regain the lead shortly afterwards as Austin Yano's point shot went off a Red Wing and went past Weyburn goalie Mitch Kilgore to give the Bruins the 2-1 lead after 20 minutes of play.

The Bruins got a big insurance goal in the second period as Calder Neufeld unleashed a rocket that went underneath the crossbar to give the Bruins the 3-1 advantage.

Weyburn would strike back in the third as Tyler Kauk fell, which allowed Jesse Ross to score on a breakaway to cut the score to 3-2. The Red Wings had some chances to tie the game, but Steven Glass held his ground to give the Bruins a 3-2 win on home ice.

Olson ended up with points on all of the Bruins three goals, felt the win was a perfect way to start the year,  as  his line with Smith and Neufeld were really clicking in the win, "It was a first game back together since the Xmas break, and I thought we all played pretty good."

Bruins Head Coach Keith Cassidy was happy with his team's effort against Weyburn."This is more of the effort we expect night in and night out. When guys are stepping up and playing with confiedence we're a team that can compete on any given night, it was nice to be rewarded with that effort."

The Bruins remain in second spot in the Sherwood Conference with a record of 21-19-0-1. The Bruins will be back in action on Friday when they hit the road, as the Bruins open up a road trip in Melfort agains the Mustangs. After the game, I spoke with Head Coach Keith Cassidy and Cole Olson.
