The CanElson Drilling Estevan Bruins showed a lot of heart and character in last night's 4-3 shootout win over the Battlefords Northstars.

The first period got off to a rocky start for the Bruins as they fell into some early penalty trouble as they took four penalties including an a double minor penalty which lead to a 4 minute powerplay for the Northstars. The Bruins killed off their the first three penalties but on the fourth powerplay Josh Betinol scored on a loose rebound to give the Northstars a 1-0 lead after the first period.

The Bruins would tie up the game early in the second period as Tyler Paslawski forced a turnover deep inside of the Northstars end and found Hudson Morrison in front scored and extended his goal scoring streak to 5 games as the Bruins tied the game up at 1-1.

The Northstars responded on the powerplay as the Northstars crashed into the Bruins Curtis Martinu with the extra traffic, Betinol scored his second of the night and gave the Northstars the 2-1 lead.

Zach Douglas would get the Bruins at even as he let a shot from the point that was blocked by a Northstar, Douglas picked up the loose puck and unloaded another shot that got through to the back of the net and the Bruins and Northstars were tied at 2-2 after the two periods of play.

Battlefords opened up the scoring early in the third period as Blake Young completed a wraparound and scored to give the Northstars the lead.

The Bruins pressed for the equalizer but were unsuccessful until with 36 seconds left with Martinu pulled, a loose scramble took place in front and Morrison scored his second of the game to send it into overtime.

Overtime settled nothing. After Martinu made the first save in the shootout, Dylan Smith buried a shot top shelf to give the Bruins the edge. Battlefords second shooter Brody Luhning was stopped by Martinu and Alex Cote gave the Bruins as he put a backhanded shot through the five hole to seal the Bruins first win in 2013.

Martinu made 43 saves for the win. The Northstars were 2 for 8 on the powerplay while the Bruins were 0 for 4.
