New Year's HeartBreak for Bruins in 5-4 Loss to Weyburn

It was an unbelievable game with an unbelievable ending but unfortunately for the CanElson Drilling Estevan Bruins they got off to a tough start in 2013 as they were defeated by the Weyburn Red Wings 5-4.

Weyburn's Jackson Schiender scored with 0.2 seconds remaining in regulation to give the Red Wings a sweep in the home and home set.

The Red Wings scored the only goal of the first period with Ty McLean deflecting a shot past the Bruins Curtis Martinu at 12:13. Martinu had to come up with a few big saves in the first period to keep it a one goal game.

In the second period the Red Wings extended their lead as the puck bounced off Martinu and went to Schiender who was all alone in front and Schneider buried the puck with backhand to give the Wings a 2-0 lead. Former Bruin Ryan Ostertag scored a powerplay goal that made it 3-0.

But the Bruins came back on the powerplay as Hudson Morrison scored a pair of power play goals in a span of a 3:25 to cut the score to 3-2.

Weyburn responded with Lane Harbor taking a turnover in the Bruins zone and managing to bury a shot past Martinu to make it 4-2. But before the end of the second period, Cole Olson scored on a 2 on 1 rush with Alex Cote to make it 4-3 heading into the final period.

The Bruins did fall into some penalty trouble in the beginning of the third period but the Nick Weiss was able get on a short handed breakaway and snuck a backhanded shot past the Red Wing's Jean Phillipe Boucher to tie the game at 4-4.

The Bruins desperately tried to get the go ahead goal in the final period as they peppered Boucher with shots including Morrison who was robbed by Boucher on a chance late in the game.

The game seemed like it was heading to overtime before a turnover at the Bruins lead Thomas Carleton giving Schiender a pass that allowed him to be the hero and allowing the Red Wings to sweep  the home and home set.

It was a big day for the line of Hudson Morrison-Alex Cote-Cole Olson. The trio combined for three goals and 8 points. The line rejuvenated a stagnant powerplay scoring twice with the extra man advantage.

The Bruins lost forward Wyatt Garagan with what appears to be a significant shoulder injury after taking a hit.

The Bruins will meet the Red Wings for one more home and home series on the final weekend of the SJHL season in late February.

Also yesterday in Weyburn, The Estevan Bruin Alumni faced off with the Weyburn Red Wings yesterday in the fourth annual Alumni Game between the Highway 39 rivals.

The Estevan Bruins Alumni pulled out on top with a 10-6 win over the Red Wings Alumni.

The Bruins will begin another home and home set on Friday at Spectra Place as the Bruins welcome the Melville Millionaires.
